Awaken at 50: Yoga’s Transformative Power on Mind and Spirit
As a black woman in her 50s(newly fifties 😂), I never imagined myself stepping onto a yoga mat. Growing up, yoga wasn’t something that was prevalent in my community, and it wasn’t until later in life that I discovered its transformative power. We’re talking late 30’s. My journey into yoga has been one of self-discovery, healing, and empowerment.
Like many women my age, I initially hesitated to try yoga. I worried about feeling out of place in classes dominated by younger, more flexible bodies. But I soon realized that yoga is for every body, regardless of age, size, or background. This also is a personal growth journey to have reached that level of confidence. It’s not about perfection; it’s about showing up as you are and honoring your body’s unique needs.
Starting out with yoga in my 50s has been both challenging and rewarding. I’ve had to confront my limitations and let go of the need to compare myself to others. Instead, I’ve learned to listen to my body and embrace where I am on my journey. Some days I feel strong and flexible, while other days I struggle to touch my toes – and that’s okay.
One of the most powerful aspects of yoga for me has been its ability to connect mind, body, and spirit. Through breath-work and meditation, I’ve learned to quiet my mind and find inner peace amidst life’s chaos. And by life’s chaos I mean, mom to 18 year old twins. Yoga has become my sanctuary, a place where I can escape the stresses of everyday life and reconnect with myself on a deeper level.

As a black woman, practicing yoga has also been an act of self-love and resistance. In a world that often tells us we’re not enough, yoga has taught me to celebrate my strength, resilience, and beauty. It’s a reminder that my worth is not determined by society’s standards, but by the love and compassion I show myself.
I’ve created my own space where I can practice yoga authentically, without fear of judgment or tokenization. Rather I’m at home or in a yoga studio.

As I continue on my yoga journey, I’m constantly inspired by the strength and wisdom of my ancestors. Yoga has deep roots in African and indigenous traditions (Kemetic yoga, also known as Egyptian yoga), and reclaiming these practices feels like coming home. I honor those who came before me and paved the way for my healing journey.
To my fellow women considering starting a yoga practice, I encourage you to take the leap. Your body is capable of more than you know, and yoga has the power to unlock your full potential. Find a teacher who resonates with you, and don’t be afraid to modify poses to suit your needs. This in particular to my older sisters. On a rainy day and those joints are achy, try restorative yoga. Most importantly, approach your practice with an open heart and a spirit of curiosity. You never know where the journey might take you.
In embracing yoga, I’ve found not only physical strength and flexibility, but also inner peace, self-love, and a deeper connection to my roots. It’s a journey that continues to unfold with each breath, each pose, and each moment of presence. And for that, I am eternally grateful. Namaste.
